Lake Manyara / Ngorongoro

A compact and rewarding introduction to Tanzania’s northern circuit. You drive to Lake Manyara National Park, where the shallow soda lake — fringed by fever trees and dense forest — creates a stunning backdrop for game viewing. The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, enormous flocks of flamingo on the lake, and over 300 bird species. Elephants, giraffe, zebra, and baboon are all reliably seen. In the late afternoon you drive up to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for the night. Drive: 3-4 hours from Moshi | Meals: picnic lunch, dinner

You wake on the crater rim and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a 4-5 hour game drive. This ancient caldera is one of Africa’s most extraordinary places — a self-contained world where lion, black rhino, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and countless other species live in remarkable density. The Big Five in a single morning is a realistic possibility. After the game drive, you ascend the rim and return to Moshi.
